One of the largest battles of the American Revolution took place in the fields and forests that now make up Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park preserves a splendid rural 18th-century landscape of hilly farmland and hedgerows that encompasses miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, a restored Revolutionary War farmhouse and a visitors center.

In this edition of "Hiking New Jersey" we have a great combination of hiking, beautiful scenery and history! It all comes together at Monmouth Battlefield State Park in Manalapan.

It was 239 years ago (1778) this month that the Battle of Monmouth took place. A moral victory for George Washington's troops and the making of a legend "Molly Pitcher"! When you get to the park either before your hike or after ... be sure to check out the museum and gift shop for a trip back to the Revolutionary War!

There are several different trails to hike and maps are located at the visitor center. You can also trek through the corn fields and orchards which were part of the battlefield. The trails for the most part are easy. One note .... at this time of year now, it is "tick" season so either avoid the grassy trails or make sure you are using tick/insect repellent and check for ticks after your hike, we found a few! This is the time of year where we are now gonna start hitting the beaches in Jersey to avoid ticks and other "summer" insects.

There are restrooms at the visitor center and there is a picnic area and playground, so you can make this a good day trip.

As you hike through Monmouth Battlefield you can't help but think your walking through not only American History, but true "New Jersey" history as well. Enjoy and be sure to take some cool photos too!
