As I was grabbing my lunch from the office refrigerator, a coworker was sitting in the kitchen by herself watching an all-news channel on TV, and she said something that I think is brilliant - she said that we need "a kindness revolution".

The world is so full of bad news these days, and there isn't a whole lot that we, as individuals, can do about the big issues.

But there is something that we can do to help those around us - we can be kind to them.

Especially this time of year. A lot of people are stressed out and have short fuses. But if we all took a moment before reacting and chose to respond with kindness instead of aggression or inconsideration, you might just start something positive.

What's the worst that could happen? You may get strange looks or a neutral response. Or, who knows, maybe you'll brighten someone's day.

As I was walking out of the kitchen, I told my coworker that I loved her idea and would write about it this afternoon. I'd remembered that I wrote an article a while ago about common courtesy, like holding doors for people. I searched back to find the article, and something interesting came up.

I'll take that as a sign.

Will you join us on the kindness revolution?
