BAYVILLE — A crash that shuttered a busy road in Berkeley Township on Friday was the result of the driver being under the influence, according to the Berkeley Township Police Department.

Micheal Longo, 37, of Cream Ridge was traveling southbound on Route 9 when his car veered into the northbound lane and struck a utility pole in front of Mike's Foreign Car Repair.

Longo's vehicle rammed into parked cars in the lot and continued across the busy road and struck another utility pole in the parking lot of CG Landscape Supply.

The vehicle sustained substantial damage during the crash. Longo was pinned under the steering wheel.

Longo's passenger, Tabitha Gudehus, 38, of Toms River, was also pinned in the backseat of the car.

The Bayville Volunteer Fire Company had to extract them from the car due to the severe damage.

A police investigation into the crash concluded that Longo was operating the vehicle under the influence.

Police also found an undisclosed amount of heroin in Longo's vehicle.

Longo has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, CDS in a Motor Vehicle, and Failure to Maintain Lane with criminal charges still pending.

Any witnesses are urged to contact the Berkeley Township Police Department Traffic Safety Office at 732-341-1132 extension 125.
