If you're a Johnson, an Applegate, or a Cranmer, then congratulations, your roots run deep in Ocean County!

As we've discussed previously, Ocean County's history goes back over two centuries. And with Toms River set to celebrate its 250th anniversary next year, I thought it would be interesting to dig a little deeper into our local history and take a look at some of the families that have been living locally since the 1800s.

With records going back to 1880, the website Forebears has a fascinating list of last names that are still common (Johnson is the most common last name in 1880, and still the 3rd most common today), and others that were very common over 130 years ago, but not as much today.

For example, Applegate was the 2nd most common last name in 1880, with over 300 living in the county. While the name doesn't make the top 100 list for today, there are still many Applegates living in and around Ocean County to this day.

So, if you're an Applegate, a Horner, or a Hulse, your family may have very well been among the earliest settlers of Ocean County.

The whole list is really fascinating. You can check it out by clicking here.
