We are in the prime gardening season here at the Jersey Shore, with so many backyard gardens producing wonderful fruits and veggies. This year my wife, April, has her garden in full bloom!

I must admit everything that comes out of her garden is delicious, but tomatoes and cucumbers are my favorite. In fact she is working on “pickling” some cucumbers this weekend and I just sampled.....delicious. By the way “dill” was the flavor and they are better then store bought.

April has some newcomers to her garden this year including “jack-be-little” pumpkins strawberries and sunflowers. Returning favorites include: tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, squash, cucumbers, green beans, pole beans, peppers and numerous herbs. Among the herbs she has are peppermint, spearmint, rosemary, basil, thyme, chives, sage, cilantro and oregano.

This year most of her garden was grown from seed, not plants. April began very early spring with the seedlings inside and then eventually transferring them outside to the garden.

Another new item to her garden are the trellises. We made these ourselves out of cow panel (heavy wire fencing) that we bent to form an arch and anchored to fence posts. Zip tied them and within minutes you have a beautiful and sturdy garden trellis to last for years. On the trellises April has green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and pumpkins all crawling along “vertically” growing. Looks really cool when sitting under them.

This year April plans to can a lot from her garden. Veggies, sauces, pickles, jams etc. so we will benefit from all her hard word all year round. It’s a “win-win”:this year during the Coronavirus Pandemic!

How is YOUR garden growing this summer?
