In our latest edition of Hiking NJ, we are off to Burlington County and a visit to the town of Mount Holly. About forty-five minutes to an hour ride for us is Southern Ocean County. Mount Holly is a nice town with lots of restaurants and stores if you wanna do some shopping while you are there.

So this is a hike I found while reading an article from Only In Your State. They did a piece "Follow This Abandoned Railroad Trail For One Of The Most Unique Hikes In New Jersey."

This little hike combines history and the outdoors. It is a very short hike, if you take the trail out and back you get about 1.7 miles in, which is a very short hike but you do see history. While walking this trail you see the remnants of the old Burlington & Mt. Holly Railroad which was built in the 1830s and decommissioned in the 1920s. So parts of this old railroad are almost 200 years old.

To find the entrance look for St. Andrews Cemetery on Pine Street in Mount Holly and there you will find the entrance.

It is a flat and easy hike and at one end you will find the Train Wreck Distillery so if you get thirsty you can swing in for a cold adult beverage.

We saw some deer along the way too which was cool and the creek and the old railroad remnants make for a nice backdrop. There is some artwork along sections of the old railroad as you will see. Again it's very short so its a nice little walk, but it's the history of the old railroad that is the draw, maybe plan lunch and some shopping in Mount Holly when you're there or swing over to Smithville Park which is just down the road and has many miles of trails.
