Need a new best friend in your life?

Two dozen dogs and puppies are almost ready for adoption after being removed from an Ocean County resident who could no longer care for the large number of animals.

There are no criminal charges pending from the hoarding situation, Ocean County Health Department Spokesman Brian Lippai tells WOBM News.

The dogs were willfully surrendered and "are in reasonably good shape as far as we can tell. So far we’ve seen only minor skin issues on a few of them."

All of the pets have been transferred to the Ocean County Animal Facilities where they are expected to become available for adoption in the coming days at the Ocean County Animal Facilities in Manahawkin and Jackson.

"The Ocean County Health Department always promotes responsible pet ownership and we encourage any pet owner that feels they are being overwhelmed with the care or number of pets in their possession to reach out to their local animal control officer, or area animal rescues and groups for assistance," Daniel E. Regenye, OCHD Public Health Coordinator said.

Most of the dogs are in generally good health but they will still undergo an examination by the shelter veterinarian.

After that they will be spayed and neutered, vaccinated, evaluated and micro chipped before getting the green light for adoption.

"These dogs will now get the second chance they deserve and make a wonderful family pet," Regenye said. "With shelters across the country crowded with homeless animals, the Ocean County Health Department strongly urges anyone seeking to find a new family pet to consider adopting a shelter dog or cat before looking anywhere else."

The dogs are a mix of sizes, colors and ages.

There are a handful of puppies, while most of them are combination of small mixed breeds.

There is even a sweet Bulldog in the batch.

"Anytime you have a large volume of dogs or cats coming in at one time like this it can be a bit of an extra load but that's what the animal facilities are here for and our staff will give these dogs the best of care before finding them permanent loving homes," Ocean County Freeholder Gerry Little, liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health, said. "So if you or someone you know are interested in adopting a shelter dog, you may want to seriously consider getting one from this adorable group."

If you're interested in adopting a shelter pet, the Ocean County Animal Facilities are located at 615 Freemont Street in Jackson and 360 Haywood Road in Manahawkin.

Both facilities are open to the public 7 days a week from 1:00-4:00 pm and until 6:30 pm on Wednesday.
