Ray Miller, a Vietnam veteran who served in the United States Air Force, spoke on behalf of the American Legion to encourage all veterans, especially post Nine-Eleven warriors and active duty National Guard and Reserve members, to attend Saturday's event at Post 129 on Church Road. It's being held from 9 a.m to Noon.

"It's common knowledge when they separate from the military, they aren't told much about their benefits," said Miller.

Many veterans are unaware about having opportunities to attend college or receiving financial help from the American Legion even if they are not members, according to Miller.

Miller pointed out older veterans want to share their knowledge about these benefits while also stressing the importance of preserving those benefits

"In order to continue to keep the benefits we have, we have to go to Congress and fight for these benefits, and we need the large organization that we have to do that," said Miller.

Miller pointed out having a large membership makes it easier to battle Congress, and he cited the American Legion's role in getting the government to agree to overhaul the Department of Veterans Affairs as a recent example of that.

Saturday's forum will feature speakers, including a the veterans financial representative from Ocean County College in Toms River, Shore Congressman Tom MacArthur and younger Legionnaires members.

"We want to let these young warriors know about the American Legion history, what we do within the American Legion, and how we can help them and their families," Miller said.

Veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), who have lost their jobs and need financial assistance, can receive help from the American Legion.

Miller also noted the Toms River American Legion held the nation's first job fair for veterans last year, which has prompted similar events nationwide.
