In just over a week, Ocean County will be overrun by ghosts, goblins, witches, wizards, superheroes, and the occasional young adult awkwardly trying to score free candy.

It seems like every year, mixed in to the parade of cute costumes, precocious princesses, and funny families, you get older teenagers with a cursory set of plastic fangs or a hockey mask slapped on, armed with pillow cases and growling "trick or treat".

Halloween is a holiday for everyone. But trick or treating, I would argue, is for kids.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a total Halloween Scrooge. Every now and again you'll get some outgoing high schoolers who pull out all the stops with truly creative costumes that they've clearly worked hard on, and I have no problem tossing them a peanut butter cup or two.

But it's the ones who don't put any effort into even pretending that they're not just going around prowling for a free sugar fix that I have an issue with.

What about you? When do you think that someone is too old to trick or treat? Do you mind giving candy to young adults if they put real effort into dressing up? Comment below and weigh in!
