Most municipalities in Ocean County have leash laws. Unless you're in a designated area like a dog park, you must have your dog on a leash. But just because it's a law, it doesn't mean that everyone follows it.

In my neighborhood, there are a number of prominent signs reminding residents of the local leash law. While most of my local neighbors are great about leashing their dogs, not all are.

I've had a number of instances where I'll be out walking my pup, and a dog that we don't know will come running over.

My favorite response is when the dog's owner calls out, "it's ok, he's friendly".

That's all well and good, but how do you know that my dog is friendly?

As I've talked about before, my dog Sydney is a rescue. I got her as an adult. She is a great dog - very friendly and loving. To people.

For whatever reason, she's never been great with other dogs. And that's part of what you get with a rescue - you don't necessarily know what happened in their past. So you have to be understanding and patient sometimes.

Knowing that my dog isn't great with other dogs, when we're out for walks I'm always conscious of who's around us. And the great majority of other dog owners are totally understanding. But when the occasional unleashed dog comes running over, I usually have to explain to the owner that my dog isn't friendly with other dogs, and to please leash their pets.

Unfortunately, it's just another case in today's society where "common courtesy" isn't always that common.
