Happy Halloween.  This is not a post about costumes or candy, but it is a topic that can be kind of creepy so I figured it was worth mentioning today.  Before you continue, please make sure you're not eating at the moment.

Okay, assuming you’re not having lunch right now, I want to talk about that wretched odor that can fill the home after a mouse takes its final breath, hiding somewhere in your house.

That recently happened to me and yuck,  it was nasty!  The reality of living where we do is that mice like to move in with us when it gets cold outside.  They’re small and nimble and get into the tiniest of places, often without our knowing it.  Until they meet their demise and stink up the joint.

Based on where the odor was strongest, I am pretty sure the deceased rodent was in the floorboards below the guest bedroom.  I wasn’t feeling like searching through the garage ceiling to find the critter and remove it.  I just put up with the smell for a couple days, burned some fragrant candles to assist, and then things got back to normal.

Some guy friends I consulted agreed that this was a good approach.  A woman friend, however, feels I should have called an exterminator to remove the offending corpse.

Since my allergies keep me from getting a cat, I'm curious how you deal with mice at this time of year.
