Five people are recovering from injuries after a Sport Utility Vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on West Veteran's Highway and struck two motorcycles Sunday afternoon, according to Jackson Township Police.

A medevac helicopter was needed to fly a female motorcycle passenger to the hospital who police said suffered a serious leg injury. The other four people involved were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The roadway was closed for three hours about a half-mile east of Hawkin Road during the investigation.

Police have not yet determined what caused a 51-year-old Jackson woman's SUV to cross into oncoming traffic shortly after Noon. She was driving alone.

The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Jackson Police Officers Trevor Crowley, Brad Reider and Edward Travisano. Anyone who may have witnessed anything is asked to call police headquarters at 732-928-1111.

In addition to Jackson Police Department officers, Quality EMS, New Egypt First Aid, Monoc paramedics, Station 56 firefighters, Ocean County Sheriff's Department CIU and Ocean County Prosecutor's Office also responded.
