It was just about two years ago that Payless ShoeSource made a surprise announcement that they would be closing hundreds of stores across the country.

The Ocean County locations escaped the axe that time, but they may not be so lucky this time according to reports.

A report from Reuters says that the discount shoe chain is expected to file for bankruptcy in the coming weeks, closing the remaining stores.

According to the Reuters report,

There is still a small chance a buyer could emerge after Payless files for bankruptcy, the sources said. In the meantime, the company is preparing to run going-out-of-business sales at its shops in the next week, one of the sources said.

Payless ShoeSource has five locations in Ocean County, including two in Brick, and one each in Toms River, Lakewood, and Lacey Township.

In New Jersey, there are 20 locations, all of which would presumably close.
