I’m not going to lie to you.  I am having a tough time as a result of the spinal fusion surgery I had in late May.  Unfortunately during the procedure I suffered some type of nerve damage which has resulted in my left foot being kind of a mess.  They call it partial drop foot although to be honest that’s not really the problem.  The issue is the nerve pain I live with 17 hours a day…fortunately I am able to sleep pretty well thanks to some assistance.

Anyway my foot often feels like shock waves are being sent through it and while part of the day it’s very manageable there are other times when the pain is significant and ice is my only recourse.  I’m on a few medications that don’t seem to be doing much and while physical therapy is a must my progress is very slow.

The neurologist who is caring for me at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York has told me that nerves are tricky and often take 12-18 months to regenerate which is a bitter pill to swallow.  The end result is my summer has not been a good one, only 4 visits to the beach and I haven’t even been in the ocean.  Now comes high school football season when I need to be on my game and truthfully it is going to be a struggle.

By the way I am still recovering from the fusion surgery which greatly limits the distance I can walk and time I can be on my feet.

I am comforted by the fact that there is light at the end of the tunnel and my family support has been tremendous, especially my wife Jane who has become my personal nurse and caretaker.

Many people have it much worse than me and my purpose today was not to seek sympathy.  However if you see me with a brace, walking funny and looking for a place to sit now you’ll know why.
