Finding New Music At Age 70

I am not much of a concert person. In my life I have probably attended somewhere around 12-15 of them and only a few in the last ten years or so.  So it is somewhat surprising even to me that Wednesday night found me at Madison Square Garden to see and hear Mumford & Sons. It was the second of three consecutive sold-out shows at the “World’s Most Famous Arena” and the band played 22 songs in a two-hour, non-stop performance.

How I ended up there is a story in itself.  Sometime in the spring my daughter Alex called me to see if I wanted to go with her, my brother and his wife.  To be honest I was not all that familiar with the band and the thought of standing for a concert (I suffer from neuropathy) was not that appealing.  The tickets were not cheap but they were a gift from my daughter and wife. Jane was not really interested in attending as she’s going to see Olivia Dean next week, also at MSG.

Anyway I started listening to Mumford & Sons with regularity the last couple of weeks and really like their music. Part of the reason for that is they remind me a little of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, my favorite group of all-time.  Marcus Mumford and his two front men (they are not his sons) are British and their style is called a combination of folk rock and indie folk…whatever that means.  I do know I like them and they were awesome in concert and Marcus especially brings a ton of energy to the show.  It’s possible it was the last concert I will ever see at a large venue but I’ll keep you posted.  Meanwhile give Mumford & Sons a listen…like me you might be pleasantly surprised.
