A Bayville man who brutally went after and attacked a woman in Lakewood in a carjacking, has now been served his prison sentence.

The results of the investigation and sentencing were announced on Monday afternoon by Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.

It was on December 5, 2018, when Lakewood Police received a call about a carjacking along Hearth Court in the township.

The ensuing investigation led police to learn that a 20-year-old woman was sitting inside her vehicle outside her home when some man she didn't know came up to her, asked for directions, and a ride.

She provided him with directions but turned him down for a ride.

He walked away, but then ended up coming back and proceeded to pound on the window eventually breaking the glass and forcing his way into the vehicle that he then drove off in with the woman inside the vehicle, sat on her, and then started to choke the woman.

Police said he threatened to kill her if she didn't remain quiet.

A short time later, she was able to get out of the vehicle by jumping out while it was moving and walked to a home nearby and called the police.

The woman was brought to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood for treatment of multiple injuries including a bite mark to her leg, a laceration on her head, and wounds to her neck, according to Prosecutor Billhimer.

As police were investigating that day, they found her vehicle abandoned in Jackson Township "with blood stains on the rear driver’s side door and quarter panel."

The blood stains were analyzed and Prosecutor Billhimer said that on June 5, 2020, the New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences "advised that the DNA profile obtained from the blood stain on the vehicle was a possible match to John Bailey."

There was a court-ordered buccal swab taken from him on October 13, 2020, and his DNA was run against the blood stain and bite mark and on January 4, 2021, it was confirmed to be an exact match by the New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences, according to Prosecutor Billhimer.

The very next day, Bailey was charged with Carjacking on a warrant and entered into the National Crime Information Center database as a wanted person, and then about two weeks later, on January 26, 2021, he was arrested by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office/United States Marshals Service Task Force in Perth Amboy, and then brought to the Ocean County Jail where he has remained ever since that day.

John Bailey, 36, of Bayville, has now been sentenced to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison as a result of his previously entered guilty plea to Carjacking which Prosecutor Billhimer said will be subject to the terms of the No Early Release Act, which will require him to serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence before he may be considered for parole eligibility.
