If you’re headed out on the roadways in New Jersey this holiday weekend, you’ll have thousands of travelers with you.

That’s according to AAA Mid-Atlantic which found that 914,000 New Jersey residents will travel 50 miles or more for the Memorial Day weekend, a slight decrease of .06 percent from the same time last year. The official Memorial Day holiday travel period starts today and goes through Monday, May 27.

“The majority of New Jerseyans, 828,650, plan to travel by automobile, which is relatively flat from the 828,300 that drove to their holiday destination last year,” said Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “However the recent increase in gas prices is not going to deter the 90 percent of Memorial Day travelers who will be venturing out this weekend. In fact, the average price for regular in New Jersey right now is about $3.43, compared to $3.60 this time last year.”

AAA is projecting that nine out of 10 holiday travelers will take to the nation’s roadways during the weekend and New Jersey is no exception.

“The roadways throughout the state will be congested with both residents and non-residents alike, most likely heading to the Jersey Shore. As a matter of fact, 79 percent of travelers say Sandy has not affected their summer travel plans,” said Noble.
