Sending Our Kids Off On Their Own

So this past week my Wife and I did what a lot of Parents have .... taken our child off to school. Our Daughter Erin began her next chapter of College heading south to Florida. Like any Parents you worry how will the kids be when they are off on their own but then your reminded that they, just like we did, will find their way and now our kids are at that point.

Here is my Parents "To Do" List for your College Kids  .... Before you leave them and say goodbye!

• Paperwork -  Make sure they have the proper ID's they need, medical cards and bank/debit cards
• Locate transportation areas (Bus, Cabs etc)
• Locate Banks and ATM's
• Find laundry and post office
• Food Shop (Our kids are responsible for their own meals) so stock those shelves
• Set up their computers, laptops, routers, cable etc
• Dads do the heavy lifting and furniture moving.
• Meet the other Parents and connect.
• Lots of pics, hugs and kisses !

It was hard saying goodbye to Erin, but I know she is a smart young woman and will make good choices and I'm so excited for her to start making her mark in the world ... beyond the life she knows here with Mom and Dad. Her roommates seem nice and they look to be bonding already. I still flash back to when I went away to college and where the heck did time go ! Now that I'm the parent dropping off ... One nice thing with today's students is that parents can see what they are up to because they post photos and videos everyday lol  when I was in school the only way parents knew what was happening was a phone call home or a letter (that's a handwritten note delivered in person through the U.S. mail) which now is an outdated way to communicate. So Mom and Dad figure out not only Facebook, but Twitter and Instagram too!

Finally and on a positive note, my other child (Zach) is continuing his journey and is working with me here at Townsquare Media! I could not be prouder of the work he's doing while continuing his education! Plus he's only 5 feet away not a 1,000 miles lol
