Police Rescue Man Who Jumped Off Mathis Bridge
An unidentified man is in the hospital after jumping off the Mathis Bridge into the icy water Wednesday evening.
Police responded to a "suspicious male near a vehicle" at the emergency cut off just after 8 p.m. As police approached the man he jumped off the bridge into the water.
Numerous officers along with fire personnel from Toms River and East Dover responded to the man in the water.
Corporal Pal Burkhardt entered the water after putting on a police ice suit. A Toms River Fire Boat and its crew pulled the man from the cold water who clinged to a piling for about twenty minutes.
The man was taken by Toms River First Aid Squad to Jersey Shore University Hospital.
