Just one day after Republican Representative Jon Runyan revealed he won't see a third term next year, a Democrat from Burlington County is already eyeing up the 3rd District Congressional Seat for the next election.

Standing at Paulsdale - the Mt. Laurel homestead of suffragist and civil rights leader, Alice Paul - Aimee Belgard, local attorney and Burlington County Freeholder, announced her candidacy for the 3rd Congressional District in New Jersey along with a plethora of local endorsements.

"In Washington, the government shutdown was a political game. In New Jersey, it meant 14,000 federal employees furloughed, including over half of the 6,700 civilians at Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst just up the road," said Belgard.

"In Washington, the talk was about who was winning the shutdown spin war. Here in New Jersey, we talked about the millions of dollars drained out of our economy as national parks were closed and contractor dollars were stopped. In Washington, Superstorm Sandy became a time to score political points and prove one's ideological purity to a radical few. In New Jersey…along our shore and in every one of our hearts, Sandy was a time when neighbor helped out neighbor…when decency prevailed…and when we all wondered: why are they holding up the aid? where is the help we need?"

Belgard said "I am running for Congress -- because our communities need a representative who will stand up for our middle class…protect our veterans…care for our seniors…rebuild our treasured shore, and fight day and night so that every New Jersey resident has a fair shot at the American Dream."

Belgard is a seasoned trial and appellate litigator with a long and distinguished record of public service. She became a tireless advocate for the American Cancer Society after losing both of her parents to the disease, and has been recognized locally as "Citizen of the Year" as well as nationally by both the American Cancer Society and the White House for her selfless service to others.

Belgard currently serves as a Burlington County Freeholder and represents more than half of the constituents of New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District. Belgard was raised in South Jersey and has lived in Edgewater Park for over a decade. She is married to a small business owner, and she and her husband are the proud parents of two school-aged sons.

So far, the Republicans have not announced a possible candidate.
