The mid-term election is one of the few Republican seats up for grabs without a incumbent running. Representative Jon Runyan is not seeking re-election which has ignited a hotly contested race between GOP candidate Tom MacArthur and Democratic candidate Aimee Belgard. Frederick John LaVergne is running as the Democratic-Republican Party of New Jersey's candidate.

There are very few competitive races across the country. "Out of the 435 races, generally about 30 or so will be competitive, largely because of gerrymandered districts. Meaning that we don't have too many competitive districts because they're frequently drawn by perhaps elected officials who draw them to benefit one political party over the other," explained Joe Patten, Department Chair of Political Science & Sociology at Monmouth University in West Long Branch.

Despite mid-term elections usually drawing lower voter turn-out, Patten pointed out people should cast ballots. "The folks in the 3rd District should be excited about this election because it is truly one of the few swing state, two-party elections. So everyone should get out and vote. You will make a difference in this one," he said.
