We joke a lot about Bennys driving badly on our roads here in Ocean County. But let's be honest, dangerous drivers can be from anywhere; Bennys, locals, etc. I saw something that I couldn't believe the other day.

I was driving my usual commute down the Parkway last week. It was 4th of July week so traffic was heavy and moving somewhat slowly. And I saw that all too familiar sight in my rear view mirror - someone moving from lane to lane just to get a little further up. Not only did the driver not care about the "pass on the left" law, but then I saw something that blew my mind - he started passing people on the shoulder!

I was astounded that someone would do something so stupid and dangerous just to get a few cars further up.

But did you know that you can do something about it when you see an aggressive driver in New Jersey?

If you have a cell phone, you can dial #77 to be connected to the State Police Aggressive Driver System. The operator will ask you what you saw, where you are, and ask you to describe the car and the license plate (if they weren't going so fast that there was no chance you could get it, of course).

Obviously, 9-1-1 should only be used in emergency situations, but an aggressive driver, like the one I saw, could easily lead to an emergency down the road. Of course you should never try to chase the person who cut you off or who you saw driving dangerously, so the #77 system gives you an option to try to help stop these dangerous motorists without overwhelming the 9-1-1 system with non-emergency calls.

So what's the worst thing you've ever seen a driver do on our Ocean County roads? Have you ever used #77? Leave a comment below and let us know!
