Unsolicited Mid-Week Thoughts

Some thoughts for the middle of a summer like week.

• Clearly there is change in the air across the country but it’s also important not to overreact during a time of great tension.  Some of the best advice I have ever received is to not make major decisions when you are very emotional. Try to pause and slow things down and give it some thought.  That would be good advice throughout the U.S. because ideas like defunding the police are being brought up during a time of emotion and anger.
• I think President Donald Trump is burying himself in a hole that he won’t be able to get out by November.  Clearly nobody has the ability to simply tell him to shut up and stop tweeting.  I can’t see how he is re-elected although Joe Biden is capable of burying himself in an even larger hole.
• Governor Phil Murphy has lifted New Jersey’s stay-at-home order which has virtually been ignored in recent weeks anyway.  He is still insisting that businesses allow their employees to work from home if they can and of course social distancing must be followed, that is unless he’s participating in a protest.
• It could be worse.  We could be under the rule of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio who thinks leadership is something where you flip-flop regularly to appease whatever group is criticizing you the loudest at that moment.
• We had sort of run out of TV shows to watch so at the advice of my son started with “Sons of Anarchy” a couple of weeks ago.  The very adult crime drama ran on FX for 7 seasons starting in 2008 and is now available on Hulu and to say we are hooked would be an understatement.  The fictional series is about a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club that operates in California and among the stars is Katy Segal who is about as far from her role as Peg Bundy as possible.  This is not a show for the family unless you’re all part of a motorcycle club.
• I have been a fan of “Billions” since it first aired on Showtime in 2016.  Now in its fifth season to me the show has lost its edge and I’m even having trouble following what is happening.  I feel it’s one of those shows in which the producers and writers never expected it to last this long and have run out of great story ideas.
• Who would have thought back in mid-March that the NBA & NHL might return before Major League Baseball?  Not I!
