Two held in probe of weekend murder in Burlington City
Two suspects are under arrest in connection with Saturday night's point-blank shooting of an Eastampton man in Burlington City. Investigators continue to probe circumstances that led to the gunfire.
Irie Y. Simmons, 18, of Pennsauken, is charged with murder and two counts related to weapons possession. Xavier L. Myers, 19, of Cinnaminson, faces a count of aggravated assault, according to Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi. Both underwent their initial appearances in Superior Court in Mount Holly this morning.
Investigators ascertained that Simmons and Myers opened fire on Eric Thomas II, 30, on East Broad and Librrary Streets at about 10:40 PM, and ran from the area.
Both were apprehended shortly afterward by patrol officers from Burlington City, Burlington Township and the Burlington County Bridge Commission. Detectives said that the weapon used in the shooting was recovered.
Thomas was pronounced dead at Lourdes Medical Center in Willingboro, at 11:29 PM. Burlington City and Burlington County investigators have taken lead roles in the ongoing probe.
Charges are accusations. Defendants are presumed innocent unless, and until, found guilty in a court of law.
