A New York man was killed by a motorist Wednesday night while trying to cross Route 9 in Lakewood, according to officials with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutor's Office Spokesman Al Della Fave told NJ.com the unidentified victim was wearing dark clothing and was outside the crosswalk when he was struck by a 2008 Ford Expedition near 11th Street shortly before 6 p.m.

The Lakewood Scoop reports the man was a Meshulach and had been collecting because he had no income due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

Both ways of Route 9 were closed between 11th and 12th Streets for the investigation.
