The investigation is ongoing, but authorities said it appears 62-year-old Kathleen Befumo was not in a crosswalk when she was struck by a 2011 Chevy Silverado near Hazelwood Road around 7:40 p.m.

The accident comes on the heels of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office issuing a reminder and warning to pedestrians about the dangers of walking along high-speed multiple lane highways.

Toms River Police said Befumo apparently crossed three lanes and the painted center lane divider when she stepped in front of the truck and was killed instantly.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. The driver voluntarily submitted to chemical testing of his blood, according to police.

An Island Heights man was arrested last week in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident on Route 37, near Fischer Boulevard. Jeffrey Michel of Colts Neck was struck while walking along the highway on March 6.
