Our Point Pets of the Week are these adorable little ones; the last left from over 300 rescued from a hoarding case where they were held in deplorable conditions and were never held, played with, or groomed.

The Monmouth County SPCA now has these five remaining Howell Hoarding Dogs up for adoption. They were among those rescued back in June from a house of almost 300 dogs. These scared babies were never socialized nor exposed to anything outside of the home.

The little ones are still very frightened of new people, new things and do not know what it means to truly just be a dog. They are making progress and many have even started to take treats from their new shelter friends -- friends that it took several months for them to get to know and trust.

While this is tremendous progress, the dogs still will not allow even these friends to pick them up and hold them. So these special-needs babies will do best in a quiet home with another well-adjusted dog from whom they can learn to be brave and confident.

These dogs still have a lot of work ahead of them as they will need to learn about walking on a leash, house training and many simple pleasures like playing with toys. It is estimated that their ages range from about 1 - 3 years old. They are all in good health physically but are frightened little pups who just need a patient home to call their own.

These are the 5 remaining dogs: Gus, who is a light tan-colored Chihuahua-type mix, Fritz and Dale who are amber-colored Chihuahua type mixes, Phoenix who is a brindle Frenchie type mix and the only girl in the group, and, finally, Chewy, a brindle Frenchie type mix who, once he warms up to you, loves belly rubs and toys!

So...if you have another dog, lots of patience and room in your heart for a very special dog, please consider adding one to your family. Each of these dogs qualifies for the MCSPCA's Work In Progress Foster to Adopt Program, where the shelter offers ongoing behavioral support as the dogs adjust to their new and unfamiliar home environment.

These wonderful dogs deserve a second chance at learning what it is like to truly be a pet and we all really hope they can find a new home for the holidays. If you are interested in meeting any of these five, please visit them at the Eatontown location, 260 Wall Street.

There are now new adoption hours at the MCSPCA: Noon - 7 pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and Noon - 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in order to catch up on getting more animals ready for adoption. For more info, call 732-542-4552 or email adoptions@monmouthcountyspca.org.
