Las Vegas Shooting: Confounding, Confusing and Simply a Head-scratcher.
I’m glad my children are grown because frankly I don’t know how I would explain what took place in Las Vegas Sunday night since I don’t understand it myself.
But many of you do have to try and answer your children’s questions about why 59 people we killed and more than 500 injured while attending a country music concert. This was not an attack by a group of terrorists but rather a 64-year old Nevada resident whose profile indicates nothing of this nature. It’s confounding, confusing and simply a head-scratcher.
Something pushed Stephen Paddock over the edge to hammer out two windows from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and begin randomly shooting into a crowd of thousands with the result being the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.
It is just the latest incident which reminds us there is no escaping evil and violence and the age of innocence keeps getting further and further in our rear view mirror.
For the first 24 hours after the shooting politics did not play a part as we were united in our horror over this tragedy. But you know that before all the dead are buried the issue of gun control or should we call lack of control will surface and take center stage.
I don’t want to get into a debate over the Second Amendment but most rational people would agree that average citizens should not be in possession of automatic or even semi-automatic weapons, legally or illegally. People who want to do harm will always find a way to get guns and no laws will prevent that but we need to find a way to remove these type of weapons where possible.
The Second Amendment was not written for the type of weapons used in Las Vegas, Orlando, Newtown or San Bernardino.
To keep and bear arms was not meant for an automatic weapon that exists for only one reason: to kill. It is not for hunting, not for sport, not to repel invasion and not to protect us from a tyrannical government.
Somehow those on both sides of the issue have to find middle ground and agree that we can do better that we’re doing today. Stop posturing and start talking. I guess that goes for a lot of issues doesn’t it?
