The house in this photo is haunted.

Well at least I will say this much, there have been some very strange things happen to me at that house that I can't explain.

Let me give you a little background first (for confidentiality sake I need to be a little vague). The house is an almost 300 year-old house in South Jersey that I have been to a number of times with the Garden State Ghost Hunters. It has quite a colorful history. It was an important strategic location during the Revolutionary War, and a number of notable statesmen (and women) have lived there. At different times throughout history it has been a brothel, a speakeasy, and a popular local restaurant. It was eventually abandoned in the late 1980s and has fallen into disrepair since.

About 3 years ago I got wind of a TV special that had been filmed at Eastern State Penitentiary with a ghost hunting group that just happened to be based here in Ocean County. I got in touch with the founder of the group, Boni Bates and had her on the air for a great interview. Off the air she told me that I should join them on an investigation sometime...hey, why not?

A little while later, I joined them on their first trip out to the Revolutionary War house. If you were to purposely create a place that you wanted to make look haunted, you'd make it look like that. Half broken chandeliers, peeling wallpaper, floors caved-in in places, and even dusty liquor bottles in the basement.

That night, we had some pretty interesting experiences, the electromagnetic meters seemed to respond and there were definitely "cold spots". Afterwords though, we got the really good stuff. If you watch the ghost hunting shows, you know about "EVPs". Briefly, an EVP (or Electronic Voice Phenomena) is a "voice" that shows up on an audio recording that wasn't heard while the audio was actually being recorded. I discovered some very interesting EVPs when I got home.

It was on a return trip, though that I captured what, in my opinion, is one of the most startling EVPs I have ever heard. A member of the team felt like there was a female spirit trapped in the basement. On the audio, the female team member says, "...and that we would get you out of this basement". It is followed by a crystal clear, male voice whisper, "no you won't".

Listen for yourself (you might want headphones to really hear the words, but you can definitely pick up the whisper through regular speakers):

What amazes me the most is the fact that I was in the room at the time. It was my equipment. I know that there was no way it could have been faked.

Since then I have joined GSGH on a number of investigations and have returned to that specific house a number of times as well. Sometimes it's a lot of sitting around and not much happens. Other times it gets weird, very weird.

Do I believe in ghosts? Honestly I can't say a solid yes or no to that. What I can say is that I have experienced a number of things that I simply just can't explain.
