Is this study a surprise to you? If you live in the Garden State you know our roadways can be a mess in many spots. At times it's like driving off-road here in Jersey with pothole after pothole. Our vehicles are constantly needing a front-end alignment to keep a smooth ride going. It can be a real "pain" driving in New Jersey.

Now we do have some good highways here in Jersey. I think the Garden State Parkway is the best road in the entire state and that's why I don't mind paying tolls because it moves well and is almost pothole-free. There are times that construction can slow down the Parkway and of course, drive-time and summer make it a bit more congested, but I think it's our best roadway. The Atlantic City Expressway is pretty good too. The NJ Turnpike has some rough patches and can be quite slow at times.

By the way, we have company on this "bad roadways" list. New York is ranked the 6th worst in America. Pennsylvania is ranked 15th worst. The #1 state with the worst roadways goes to Rhode Island.

What road do you think is the worst in New Jersey? Possibly Route 9? Tell us what you think and post your comments below.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
