The corner of Mississippi Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey is about to look very different.

For the past 35 years, Formica Cleaners stood in this location.

They are now the latest in a long line of long-time businesses to close forever in Atlantic City.

To add insult … to injury, it’s possible that a marijuana dispensary may replace this viable and productive former business.

The corner of Mississippi Avenue and Atlantic Avenue is an iconic, local block of Atlantic City for long-time business establishments.

Below, look at this John Devlin’s photograph, which shows this legendary street corner during the 1930’s in Atlantic City.

Devlin’s Grandparent’s restaurant can be seen in this photograph.

It is very sad to see establishments that have been open for generations close.

This is what the Formica Cleaners storefront looks like today (closed sign is posted in the window).

Formica Cleaners was famous for its 1 hour service. For casino executives and all business persons, this was always very handy to have available.

Some of the long-standing business closures are because the owners have worked so hard for decades and now have an opportunity to sell and enjoy a well deserved retirement.

Such appears to be the case here with the recent closing of Formica’s Cleaners.

Others who have shuttered their business doors forever have done so because of the current negative atmosphere in Atlantic City.

With New York casino gambling lurking right around the corner, all responsible partners must band together and protect Atlantic City’s present and future.
