Hurricane Sandy blew through Ocean County 16 months ago. While our stories may not be in the news as much as they were before, those of us who are here every day know that there are still raw, open wounds from the disaster.

This past weekend I made a trip out to the Green Island section of Toms River to participate in a documentary film shoot. The focus of the shoot was the story of Mike, the "miracle survivor". You probably remember Mike's story of leaving behind a heart- wrenching good bye note when he thought that he wouldn't survive Sandy's wrath.

Even after many phone and email conversations, this past weekend was the first time that I met Mike in person, and also the first time that I saw the devastation of his house and neighborhood first hand.

It was a stark reminder that, even almost a year and a half later, the damages, both property and emotional, are still very real, every day things that much of Ocean County still deals with.
