Here's some breaking news. We spend a lot of money on Christmas gifts in the Garden State. Thank you, Captain Obvious. But it turns out New Jersey is not the state that spends the most in the country. Not by a long shot. Our ranking is going to surprise you, especially after you've shelled out so much money this year already.

If you guessed that we were number 1, you already know you're wrong, but how about the fact that New Jersey doesn't even make the top 5, according to Demdaco? it's apparently true.

The Garden State actually ranks as the #7 state for Christmas spending in the whole country. And if you feel like I do, you're a little insulted by this. We have plunked down more than our fair share this holiday season, and now we're left feeling a little cheap. At least I do.

The data says we spend $1146 on our Christmas gift list, and that really sounds like a lot, doesn't it? it actually is a lot, but 6 states spend more on average. The top state is North Dakota at $1324, so we didn't miss by much.

The other states that spend more than we do are Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, and New Hampshire. these numbers are based on what people in each state plan to spend, not necessarily did spend.

And that's the rub. Every single Jersey Shore resident knows that what we intend to spend is one thing, but what we actually spend is another thing altogether. Now I'm starting to feel better. Because we all know that we spend a ton more than we think we will.

So, maybe we really are the overspending, overpriced state I thought we were. Nobody tells us they spend more than we do and gets away with it. We are good at finding loopholes here in New Jersey, and we just found this one.

Now we can have a Merry Christmas.
