Todd Frazier made his first major league appearance of the season Thursday for the Cincinnati Reds but it was not the kind of the day the 26-year old from Toms River was hoping for.

Frazier started at third base and went 0-4 with a throwing error in the Reds 6-3 win over the Cardinals.  The former Toms River South and Rutgers standout was called up this week after Miguel Cairo went on the disabled list.  Frazier showed promise when given an opportunity last season, hitting 6 home runs in just 112 at-bats for the Reds.

Over the years Etan Patz has become best known as the first child whose picture was put on the side of a milk carton.  The then 6-year old was walking to the school bus stop in his SoHo neighborhood of New York City for the first time on May 25, 1979 when he went missing and it sparked a massive search and media blitz.  Despite that he was never found and four years later then President Ronald Reagan declared May 25 National Missing Children’s Day.  The Patz case also led to new legislation and greater awareness of missing children.

I mention this because 33 years later the FBI and NYPD might have their first lead in years as they are searching the basement of a nearby building for remains, personal effects or clothing.  The theory they are working on is that a former handyman from Etan’s building killed him and buried the boy in the basement area which he used for a workshop.  Authorities say they expect to be on location for up to 5 days with jackhammers and pickaxes searching for clues.

The Griffin Football Association is holding their 3rd Annual St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School Alumni Golf Outing on Tuesday, May 15th at Eagle Ridge in Lakewood. The event features at 1pm shotgun start and will conclude with a dinner.  Last year’s outing raised $10,000 to help with school scholarships and the football program.  For information on playing, attending the dinner or sponsoring the event you can visit the school web site at www.mondonhs.com and just click on the “Alumni” page.
