A 12-year veteran of the Atlantic City Police Department has been charged with official misconduct and theft.  38-year-old Officer Michael l. Jones of Atlantic City faces charges related to his alleged failure to comply with the terms of the live-in police officers program.  The program allows officers to lease public housing for substantially discounted rent in exchange for active community policing efforts.  Instead, Jones is accused of not living in the Stanley Holmes Village unit and leasing it out for 74 months  pocketing between $39,200 and $51,000.

Jones turned himself in tuesday to the Atlantic County Prosecutors office and was processed and released on his own recognizance with conditions.

He faces 5 to 10 years with a mandatory period of parole ineligibility for the second degree official misconduct count alone.
