Last summer, Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would ban smoking on beaches state-wide, instead choosing to leave it up to individual towns.

Many Jersey beach towns already prohibit smoking on beaches, including Belmar, Harvey Cedars, Lavallette, Long Branch, Seaside Heights, and Seaside Park. A newcomer to that list: Atlantic County's Longport.

The new rules would also ban all types of smoking at public facilities, including buildings and parks.

Anyone continuing to smoke after receiving being told to stop will be subject to a fine of not less than $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second offense and $1,000 for each subsequent offense.
