Winter can be a really difficult period, especially for those of us who don’t especially like cold temperatures and can do without snow, sleet and ice.

One year ago the ground was still covered with snow following a blizzard that came the day after Christmas and it was really weeks before most of the drifts and piles were finally gone. That snowstorm made winter seem endless for many but things are certainly different this year as we’re in the second week of January and temperatures have been above average. More importantly we’ve had no real snowfall and the extended forecast is not calling for anything to worry about over the next ten days. I realize that there’s still a long way to go but every day like what we’ve been experiencing is one less day of real winter and I’ll take it.

Just about everywhere I went yesterday you could count on one thing….Tim Tebow would be part of the conversation. The Broncos quarterback is the hottest thing in the sports world today….heck he might be tops in several categories including religious icons. Tebow led Denver to an upset win over Pittsburgh Sunday in TV’s highest-rated wild-card playoff game in 24 years. The twitter world went crazy as well and after he threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to win the game in overtime there were more than 9,000 tweets per second announcing the Broncos victory. Denver plays at New England Saturday night and while that’s not usually a great night for TV you can expect millions will be turning in to watch, root and pray for one of the most interesting and unusual athletes the sports world has ever seen.

It’s been a wonderfully surprising season for the Seton Hall men’s basketball team who Monday appeared in the national rankings for the first time in 11 years. The 14-2 Pirates are #24 in the weekly Associated Press poll and the last time they were ranked was in late January in 2001. Unfortunately that team fell apart and finished just a game over .500….here’s hoping that does not happen this year.

Tonight by the way Monmouth University hosts nationally-ranked Harvard University at the MAC in West Long Branch.

To me “The Good Wife” is absolutely the best drama on network TV and each episode leaves you looking forward to the next. “Parenthood” is also a terrific show and a must-see each week and I’m delighted that “Shameless” and “Californication”are back on Showtime….very adult but very funny.
