It’s been pretty cold this week and you might be surprised to learn that we will get a little spring preview next week with temperatures in the 50’s and even 60.That won’t do those taking part in Saturday’s  Polar Beach Plunge in Seaside Heights any good when it looks like the mercury will stay in the 30’s with winds gusting at 15 MPH….oh and water temperatures around 42 degrees.

The 31st annual plunge benefits Special Olympics New Jersey and as many as 8,000 plungers are expected to raise about $2.5 million.  I did this myself in one of the first years of the event when it was much smaller and it is quite a spectacle for participants and spectators alike.  After getting out of the water many will gather at one of the local taverns as plunge day is also party day in Seaside.

If you’re like me you can’t wait for winter to come to an end…even if we’ve been quite lucky up to this point.  As we hit the later part of February here are some numbers which might warm you up:

  • It’s only 15 days to this Ocean County St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Seaside Heights. Patrick’s Day itself is only 23 days away.
  • It’s only 30 days until Palm Sunday and 37 days till Easter. Not too early to get your outfits together.
  • The home and season opener for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws is only 42 days away. Get your tickets now!
  • If you really want to push it then the start of Memorial Day weekend is 91 days from today…that’s still pretty far but it will go pretty fast.

On unrelated note on Wednesday, March 6th Ocean County sports legends Frankie Edgar, Todd Frazier, Keith Elias and Al Leiter will be joining me on stage at the Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College.  “Aspirations of a Professional Athlete” is a panel discussion I will lead on the highs and lows of making it as a pro athlete.  Part of the highly-acclaimed Blauvelt Speaker Series the event is scheduled from 6-7:30pm and it’s FREE but you must register in advance. Simply visit:  https://www.grunincenter.org/event/aspirations-of-a-professional-athlete/ and click on “Get Tickets.”
