The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) approved a hike that equates to about $3.52 per month for a typical residential customer, according to information released by the company this afternoon. It takes effect August 29.

It appears to be about half of the $5.2 million that the company sought, based on previous estimates of an average $7.57 monthly increase. It was the company's fourth submission since 2008.

"The Board's approval is an equitable settlement," said Director of Operations Jim Mastrokalos in a prepared statement.

United Water submitted the request to address system improvements they assessed at $22 million. In the two years since its last increase, United Water says it has installed nearly three miles of new water mains, upgraded service infrastructure, connected more than 12,000 smart meters, rehabilitated wells, modified support pumping systems and improved treatment facilities.

"The average United Water Toms River customer pays about $1.30 per day for a day's worth of water, which is far less than the cost of one gallon of bottled water purchased in a supermarket or convenience store," Mastrokalos said.

"United Water delivers water 24 hours a day, seven days a week directly to the tap which still equates to about a penny a gallon."
