Much of Toms River started the day in the dark with over 10,000 customers without power.

The outage began around 4:30 a.m. according to JCP+L's outage map, which around 2,000 customers without power in Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and Island Heights.The map indicates that the area most affected is off Fischer Boulevard near Hazelwood Road.

By 7:30 a.m. the number was down to 300 although the number jumped back up to 1,000.

A spokeswoman for JCP+L earlier said crews were trying to pinpoint the cause of the outage but did not offer a timetable to restore power.

New Jersey Fast Traffic's Bob Williams says the power outage knocked out power to several traffic lights along Route 37.
