The 34-year-old victim was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center In Neptune where she was undergoing surgery last night for wounds to her upper torso.

Police arrested 23-year-old Giovanny Alba of Brooklyn, New York, on attempted murder, possession of a weapon, and resisting arrest, according to Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department.

Alba's mother, 52-year-old Denise Roman, of Brooklyn, also was arrested allegedly for interfering with the officer trying to arrest her son, Stocco said.

Alba is accused of initiating a physical confrontation with police and resisting arrest. Stocco said he had to be subdued. Officer Frank Lauria suffered minor cuts and scrapes in the struggle, according to Stocco.

Toms River Police Detectives Randy Petrick and John Bajcic as well as Lieutenant Carlos Trujillo-Tovar, Detective Brian Haggerty, and Detective Raymond Gardner of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit are investigating. Further assistance was provided by the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office, he said.

It's unclear what prompted the incident, which remains under investigation.
