The Toms River High School North Mariners Varsity Football Team is tackling cancer to raise awareness and donations for a cure by sponsoring Monmouth Medical Center's "Roll Out The Ribbons" campaign during the month of October. Players are collecting donations of $One-dollar or more for rainbow-colored ribbons representing all cancers in all communities, according to Mariner mom and cancer survivor Maria Nardoza.

"In the last few years they've lost some students to a few different kinds of cancers and it really hits home when you go to school with these people. We also have some members of the faculty who have been through cancer and they're survivors," said Nardoza.

Every "Ribbon on Honor" will be tied along the Home Side fence of the Mariner's football field for viewing.

"They're trying to get the word out there about cancer because we're so used to hearing  about it that people are kind of numb to it," Nardoza said.

Participants can show support by customizing ribbons with personalized messages. Community members also are being encouraged to display "Ribbons of Honor" on their homes, mailboxes and cars.

Ribbons will be sold at T.R.N. H.S.'s home games on Friday, October 17 at 7p.m. against Toms River High School East, and on the 31st at 7 p.m. against Brick Township High School.

Anyone who would like to donate directly to the Roll Out The Ribbons Foundation can go to rollouttheribbons.com.
