Ocean County's prescription drug drop-off program has taken thousands of pounds of pills out of circulation so far this year.

The Prosecutor's Office says Project Medicine Drop has collected and destroyed 5,400 lbs. of pills in the first 6 months of 2015, with the most recent pill burn accounting for more than 2,500 lbs.

The initiative is designed to make sure unused medications don't end up being used illegally or leading to addiction issues.  Drop-boxes are located at many police departments in towns including Barnegat, Berkeley, Jackson, Lacey, Lakewood, Little Egg Harbor, Long Beach, Manchester, Ocean, Point Pleasant, Seaside heights, Stafford, Toms River and Tuckerton.
