The Coast Guard said a multi-agency search for the man covered 248-square miles, and involved Bradley Beach Police, the Belmar Water Rescue Team and the New Jersey State Police.

The man is identified by NJ Advance Media as 31-year-old Julio Pierre, a Haitian immigrant who arrived in Newark about a month ago and was visiting the beach with friends.

"Our hearts go out to the friends, families, and loved ones who are impacted by this tragic event" said Capt. Scott Anderson, Deputy Sector Commander, Sector Delaware Bay. He added, “Coast Guard crews and our partner agencies worked together to search for this individual and it’s never an easy decision to stop searching."
