Part of Route 35 in Bay Head will be closed for several weeks starting 10 a.m. Monday  due to roadway and drainage reconstruction. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the work is part of a $265 million Superstorm Sandy response project that began in the summer of 2013. The closure will take place from Delaware Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach to Osborne Avenue in Bay Head.

NJDOT says a new, thicker stone-and-asphalt roadway will be laid to ensure a more stable and smooth ride. Workers will also install a storm-water drainage system designed to handle 25-year storms, including nine pump stations and treatment facilities to purify water reentering the Barnegat Bay.

Route 35 businesses in the area will remain open throughout the road work, although local traffic will be restricted when the work begins. The project is expected to be completed before the year's end.

NJDOT recommends the following detours:

Route 35 Southbound (from Point Pleasant Beach)

  • Follow signs for Route 88 West
  • Turn left onto Bay Avenue
  • Turn left onto Bridge Avenue
  • Turn right onto Route 35 South

Route 35 Northbound (from Mantoloking)

  • Turn left onto Bridge Avenue
  • Turn right onto Bay Avenue
  • Turn right onto Route 88 East
  • Follow signs for Route 35 Noth
