The 2014-15 school year marks the beginning of not only a new term, but also a new era for the Toms River School District.

New Superintendent David Healy was selected back in March, and he has big plans for what he calls "The Refinement Year.".

"We're going to work on refining the great things that exist in Toms River and not necessarily bring a number of new things in," said Healy.  "There's so much that exists in Toms River that's great, and we just need to refine those things rather than look for new things."

Healy says this year will center on improving instruction and professional development for teachers; meeting state and federal mandates; and improving student achievement.

It's been two years since former TR Superintendent Michael Ritacco was sentenced to federal prison for corruption, and Healy's back-to-school address to his faculty and staff focused greatly on the importance of credibility.  He also says parents - and the community as a whole - can do their part to help.

"By trusting us and supporting us, and giving us the opportunity to show them that we're here for kids, we're here for their kids," Healy said.  "And anything they can do to get that message across and support us is just really important."
