However on Friday, October 10th the spotlight will belong to the Heroes & Legends Celebrity Softball Classic with proceeds to benefit the Sanctuary Island Charity for Veterans & Children.  Scheduled to play in the game will former major leaguer and two-time World Series champion Jay Johnstone, Monmouth County native and former National League Rookie of the Year John “The Count” Montefusco,Toms River native and ex-major leaguer Jeff Frazier and former Rutgers standout and pro baseball player Matt Smith.

The celebrity baseballers will be joined by other former and current pros including football’s Bruce Harper, Stephen Baker and Keith Elias, local hockey great Jim Dowd and bowling Hall of Famers Parker Bohn and Johnny Petraglia.  It’s a pretty impressive lineup.

Their opponents will be The Purple Heart Heroes All Star team, a group of ten who have earned the Purple Heart while serving in the military.  The players are from Texas and they travel all over the country…several of them have prosthetics.  Their goal and that of game organizers is to help raise national attention to the challenges facing our veterans while at the same time using sporting events to honor them.

The softball event on October 10th will feature a home run derby at 5:30 followed by the Celebrity Heroes and Legends Game at 7pm.  Tickets are on sale at the ballpark or by calling the BlueClaws at (732) 901-7000 option 2.  There will also be a post game meet and greet and VIP party with a limited number of tickets available to that.  Visit salutemilitary.com for more information.

As part of our high school football partnership with Jersey Mike’s Subs the Shore Sports Network honors a “Team of the Week” every Wednesday and this week’s recipient is Toms River North following the Mariners upset of Toms River South last weekend.  Along with Jersey Mike’s Area Director Chad Tirpack I helped present coach Dave Oizerowitz with a special game ball following practice yesterday and then all the players got to enjoy a sub sandwich.  It was a double-whammy for North as running back Asante Moorer was also selected as the Sport Clips Player of the Week in online voting.
