Just in time for arthritis awareness month, there's new information out that could help us all live healthier lives.  There appears to be a link between cases of rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease.

Arthritis, which is an inflammation of the joints throughout your body, and periodontal disease, an inflammation of the gums in your mouth are linked.  How so?  Research indicates that patients who suffer from one are eight times more likely to also have the other.  Knowing the connection and the risk factors can help with treatment options and reduce pain and discomfort.

Dr. Scott Zirkin is the President of the New Jersey Society of Periodontists.  He says "many of the patients who suffer from both but get their mouth treated often see a major reduction in pain.  We have heard stories of people going to periodontists and then notice a change in the way their legs and ankles feel.  This is amazing research and information that they're still investigating.  We don't yet know the correlation."

The study was first published a few years back in the Journal of Periodontology.  Zirkin explains "some arthritis patients may develop the gum disease due to restricted strength and mobility of their hands so they're not getting good oral hygiene at home.  There are alternatives including power toothbrushes, oral irrigators, dental floss holders and prescription-strength mouthwash."

Zirkin urges everyone to take good care of their teeth and gums and if you suffer from either one of the conditions, talk to your doctor about your treatment and care options.
