The individual who took off in someone else's car with two children in the back seat in Lakewood last Friday - only to hop out again after several blocks - is still sought by township police. They're hoping that a description given by the victim will help.

The man they're looking for is described as Hispanic, about 18 to 24 years of age, with dark features and a goatee. At the time, he was wearing a red ball cap, red zippered hoodie and brown or maroon pants, police said.

According to statements given to officers, the dad from Pinehurst Drive had stopped at an apartment complex at 700 Clifton Avenue to retrieve a phone number, at about 9:55 PM on Friday, April 4.

The suspect appeared to be leaning on a nearby vehicle, using a cell phone, and clambered into the car and sped away while the victim was occupied, police said.

The victim gave chase but soon stopped and called 911, police said, indicating a course along Madison Avenue (Route 9).

Patrolman Michael Anderson found it on Third Street near Madison, with both children still slumbering in back. They were reunited with their dad.

Witnesses described a Hispanic male running from the car, police said. Investigators combed the car for evidence and a K-9 unit from the Ocean County Sheriff's Office scoured the area.

Lakewood Police can be reached at 732-363-0200. The case is led by Detective Sergeant Robert Humeny, extension 5339, and Detective Sergeant Greg Staffordsmith, extension 5318.
