Two boaters narrowly escape hypothermia after spending the better part of a half-hour in the icy Raritan Bay waters off Keansburg today, according to information from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The pair were not identified, but a report on nj.com indicates that they are from Hazlet.

Petty Officer Second Class Spencer Hinman of the Sandy Hook station said that they were found holding onto their upended craft, but neither wore a life jacket.

"Their bodies were starting to stiffen and it was hard for them to bend their limbs when we got there," Hinman said in a prepared release. "One of the guys was breathing pretty rapidly."

They were treated on shore by Keyport medical technicians and taken to Bayshore Hospital.
